Halloween is coming to Hartley Park beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday night, where Mayor Richard Thomas will host the first-ever Pumpkin Blaze, complete with hundreds of glowing pumpkins that have been carved by Mount Vernon children in recent weeks.
Thomas said the Mount Vernon Department of Recreation engaged the school district, local artists and the community to carve, paint and install the pumpkins at Hartley Park. He praised Deputy Commissioner Sylvia Gadson for helping put together the event and the Thornton High School students that helped “create a spooky and fun display for Mount Vernon.”
“Families of volunteers from around our community came out to help carve hundreds of pumpkins and now they are ready to light up the city,” he added.
The Pumpkin Blaze will be a festive event for Mount Vernon families, complete with hayrides, a haunted house, and a mini scavenger hunt that will “keep little ‘Boos’ and ‘Ghouls’ happy” and pumpkin pie and hot apple cider to help keep people warm.
“We expect all types of costumes and kids of all ages to enjoy the hayrides, hot cider, candy apples and pumpkin blaze,” Thomas said. “While we work to restore Memorial Field, we will continue to reimagine the use of parks to help families create new memories.”
